Empowering Youth Skaters

Skate-a-thon 2023

As the largest youth derby league in the world, Seattle Derby Brats relies on our families and donors to help cover the gaps in our funding, provide for sponsor skaters and (hopefully) get a permanent roof over our collective heads. This year’s Skate-a-thon is in full swing. Donate to your favorite skater and help SDB continue to empower youth skaters.

SDB COVID Return To Play Policy

SDB follows COVID Guidelines set by the Washington State Department of Health currently in place. The following is recommended:

If a player, coach, or official tests positive for COVID:

  • They must isolate for at least 5 days
  • If their fever is gone without fever reducing medication and their symptoms are improving on Day 5, they may leave isolation
  • They should continue to wear a well fitting mask around others for an additional 5 days (days 6-10)
  • If they continue to have a fever or other symptoms have not improved after 5 days of isolation, wait to end  isolation until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and their other symptoms have improved

If a player, coach, or official has close/known exposed to someone who has COVID (such as a family member):

  • Get tested 3-5 days after your last contact with the person with COVID-19
  • If positive, follow the testing positive guidelines
  • Wear a high-quality mask or respirator around others at home and in public for 10 days after your last contact with the person with COVID-19

Seattle Derby Brats is the premiere Seattle area junior roller derby league for skaters ages 8-18. We strive to create a safe, fun, and positive environment where skaters can be athletic, increase their self-confidence, obtain new friendships, and be both self-empowered & self-expressive. This is where skaters learn teamwork, good values, discipline, confidence, interaction, and stewardship through the competitive sport of Northwest Competitive Flat Track Junior Roller Derby.

Self-Confidence

Physical activity, and sports in particular, can positively affect aspects of personal development among young people, such as self-esteem, goal-setting, and leadership.

We offer four levels of roller derby for skaters ages 8-17, starting with Tootsy Rollers (positional blocking) for younger skaters, up through the Galaxy, the SDB full contact travel team, the 2015, 2016, & 2017 Junior Roller Derby Association National Champions.

Self-Empowerment

Accomplishments are empowering. Sports related exercise enables skaters to build confidence in their own abilities. Each and every time skaters become proficient in a new skill, they get these amazing boosts of empowerment that continue to reinforce they can do anything and be anything they choose.

Junior roller derby takes the focus off appearance and teaches skaters to embrace their bodies abilities, not what they look like but what they can do. The added bonus is improved body images they form over time.

Self-Expressive

It’s no coincidence that participating in organized team sports is linked to higher academic achievement in school. Sports require memorization, repetition, and learning, along with determination, grit, and goal-setting all of which help many skaters perform better in the classroom and within their social circles.

Teamwork

Through teaching skaters the rules and techniques of junior roller derby, they learn to value themselves and each other, build trust and rely on their teammates to achieve a common goal, effectively communicate to solve problems, and put the collective needs before individual wants.

Learning to work with others through team sports significantly benefits girls in their school and home environments as well as in their future careers.

Self-Discipline

Organized team sports help children learn that working to their own personal best helps them achieve goals in all aspects of their lives.

Learning takes time and practice helps build patience, especially when partnered with accomplishment boosts – it helps skaters learn that if they are patient with themselves and keep trying, they will build their skills.

Long-Term Benefits

Taking part in competitive sports teaches skaters to handle disappointments, accept personal responsibility for any mistakes, and to positively reflect on their own personal improvement goals.

All of the highs and lows that come with playing a sport help build resiliency.

Participating in sports and exercising regularly helps reduce pressure so you can let go of stress. Bonus, you gain new friends who can be there for you as a support system.

These are all valuable life lessons that will benefit girls throughout their lives.

Seattle Derby Brats empowers girls and gender expansive individuals to be strong, healthy and confident. We do this through a supportive, inclusive community teaching junior roller derby. Seattle Derby Brats has a philosophy that is designed to instill positive ideals, and help young skaters realize their own potential.
